How to Write an Excellent Army Resume

1How to Write an Excellent Army Resume Writing an Army resume presents many new challenges to those individuals who have been members of the Army and military. These individuals are generally required to work a tour after boot camp that can last upwards of four years. On one hand, these people have learned valuable tools and skills that they would not have had the opportunity to learn working as a civilian. Because they have been out of the workforce for a few years, they may not have an extensive work history to fall back on.The other disadvantage that these individuals tend to have is that their newly developed skills require the knowledge of specific military jargon. This jargon often incorporates more than one job task into one simple phrase. Civilian companies and their managers may not know what job duties are clumped in the term "technical enhancement," for example. This jargon often leaves employers confused and with a lot of questions. This type of jargon must be simplified in the Army resume. Job seekers must remember that their potential employers may not have been in the service and that they will have to break down their job duties into civilian terms. Explain what you did in lay-mans terms. For example, explained that you used specific software in your job duties or that you trained individuals how to maintain military vehicles such as tanks, trucks and airplanes. There are a lot of people who don't know what happens on a daily basis at the Army base, and you must explain this in your resume. Those individuals that have been in the service for an extended period of time often have difficulties as well. They tend to include more military jargon, as this is the way that they communicated on a daily basis with their co-workers. These veterans tend to copy their job descriptions exactly as they are listed in their military manuals. It is important to remember that those manuals are filled with jargon that a civilian employer will not understand. The jargon is too difficult for these people to understand and it must be broke down into different job tasks, even if it means your resume ends up being more than one page long! After you have found a way to eliminate your Army jargon, you will want to describe your awards and recognitions in a comprehensible manner as well. Explain the award and what you did to receive the award using terms that potential employers will be able to understand. Many career counselors may tell you that you should try to downplay your military experience. This is not necessarily true, as you most likely possess all of the character qualities that the employer is looking for. You will want to show that you learned discipline, teamwork and dedication during your duty. These character comments are definite assets to potential employers. If you had any levels of security clearance, be sure to include those as well. These facts will show that you are dependable and have character, so much that the government trusted you with confidential information. The one area that you may need to tone down is your active combat experience, unless it pertains to the position that you are seeking. This area might disturb future employers and it might not be a great idea to tell them if you killed anyone during combat either. Active combat rarely comes into play in the corporate or retail world and you may choose to just explain that you did participate in active combat without getting into extreme detail. The employer will appreciate the fact that you played an active role in protecting the country. The main thing to remember while developing your resume is that you want it to be easy to understand. Have a friend or family member that does not have military experience read your Army resume. This will help to ensure that the resume is understandable and still covers all of your achievements that you have acquired.

How to Create a Resume for a Veteran

1How to Create a Resume for a Veteran Can a military resume really get you far in the civilian world? Even if your military resume is pretty impressive with credits to your name to deal with blowing up bridges from a mile up in the sky, how do you translate that into something that a new boss will require - in a more prosaic real world? Depending on the kind of responsibilities a veteran was actually trusted with, it really is possible to create a resume all fired up with the right achievements. The most important thing you can do when you create a resume for a veteran is, you can take the military vernacular away, and replace it with simple English that a civilian boss might appreciate. Actually, there is a website, an online resource that helps you see how a military title for a certain responsibility can translate into civilian language. It is Online.Onetcenter.org. Go here and type in a military occupational code to see what the job responsibilities were a military person was entrusted with, and what they would be called in the civilian world. For instance, if you type in 15-1021.00, you right away find that the civilian equivalent for that indecipherable job title would be something along the lines of an analyst programmer, a computer programmer or a software developer. They list all the skills, the areas of talent and the qualities that a military person in that position might make use of, and help you find a civilian position around those skills. Search Monster.com with those skills, and you should come out on top.If there is one area where military veterans can excel, it's in leading others. What they are not so good at is really selling themselves on their skills (which can be pretty impressive). What a vet can do in these circumstances is, to write a cover letter and create a resume that brings attention to specific skills and achievements, and that reminds a potential employer all the positive reviews they received in the military. And then quantify everything with statistics and concrete examples. Another thing that should really go into that resume is all the training for specific skills that the veteran has taken advantage of over the course of his stint in the military. The typical military vet has the benefit of hundreds of hours of courses, certifications and training. While in the military those things might be pretty regular routine, out in the civilian world, they are something really special.A veteran can really be successful in the civilian world if they would only try to translate everything in the right way for a civilian job.

How Do I Write a Military Resume to Find a Job in a Hurry

1How Do I Write a Military Resume to Find a Job in a Hurry Jump starting the next phase of your career after you leave the military means finding the right words to share with civilians all of the skills, strengths, and qualifications that you acquired during your time int he military. What does a military resume look like? Will it help me find a job? Regardless of which branch of the armed services you served in, you have gained valuable experience that will help you to move into the civilian world. You may have earned some awards for heroism, but you'll need more than courage to transition to the civilian sector. Here are some of the key success factors that you need to be aware of as you prepare your resume:Paint the Right PictureWhen you write your military resume, you can portray a person who worked in a communications hub in a makeshift building in Afghanistan, or a savvy communications professional ready to take on the corporate world. To get there, take away the specific terms that are unique to the military and portray your experience as well as your skills as more universal.Take advantage of the positive reputation that former military members have, including discipline skills that are highly valued by potential employers outside of the military. When drafting your military resume or veterans resume, make the most of any leadership experience that you have gained as well, as the ability to lead effectively is also prized by civilian employers.Show Your Talents At The TopAdd a summary of your key skills at the top of your resume. If you were in a management position during your time in the military and now want to transition those skills and experiences to a career in managing finance, then you should list skills that a corporation will value. Use current buzz words and key terms that will resonate with the hiring manager.Since many corporations use either software programs to sift through resumes before people view them or use human resources personnel to screen for the best resumes, it is important to use the exact right terms. Not sure? Try to work in a few different versions of the same key term, if possible, in your resume to help increase your resume's odds of making it into the hands of the hiring manager who will ultimately decide whether to have you come in for an interview.Re-Order Jobs On Your ResumeMany professionals list their career events in chronological order, going from most recent to oldest. Instead, try out a functional format the highlights the most relevant positions to the job you are aiming for. It could be that your decade in the Navy has little to do with your desire to become an adjunct professor at a local community college. If this is the case, then, for example, it would be more appropriate to highlight past experience teaching, even if it was before you entered the military.Format Your Resume For TodayLook online for samples of resumes or templates that you can use to format your resume. Try to consult the website of an award-winning writer with several years of experience. Expertise in cover-letter writing and job interview counseling is also helpful. It is important to portray yourself as a professional who is in tune with current trends, including the current format for resumes in your industry. Like it or not, appearances matter, which means that a resume whose format is incomprehensible or hopelessly old fashioned is much more likely to be tossed than looked at.Customize Your Resume For The Job You WantWhile it is undeniably tempting to blitz every job listing that you locate online with the same generic resume, if you take the time to customize your resume for each job listing you are much more likely to be asked in for an interview. Start by making sure that your resume reflects a professional in the field that you are applying for. A job as a computer programmer will require different skill sets and experiences than a systems administrator position. You may be qualified for both, but the employer looking for a systems administrator will not be wowed by your computer programming skills and vice versa.More than the obvious job title, however, it is important that you scan the job listing for key terms that you an incorporate into your resume. Those key terms are likely to be the ones that the software program or human resources worker is looking for when screening new resumes. This could mean changing "maintained budgets and accounts" to "performed account reconciliations and managed budget" in your key skills section.Don't be reluctant to hire a professional resume writer with experience in career transition to help develop your professional military resume. Remember sometimes it's important to know when to delegate.

Former Military Veterans Resume Writing Tips For Civilian Jobs

1Former Military Veterans Resume Writing Tips For Civilian Jobs The military is a demanding yet engaging profession for many young men and women. Although it prepares you with valuable work skills, technical knowledge, and superior discipline, many retired or inactive military members are left without jobs when they leave the military. No matter what branch you are serving in, whether it is the army, navy, marines, air force, or coast guard, you have valuable experience that gives you an upper hand when searching for technical related jobs.Your resume is the window into your past experiences, and you should highlight all of the skills, accomplishments, awards, and training you have received over the course of your military career. Organizing your resume correctly is extremely important. For more tips on effective resume organization for transitioning military members, see past articles in this series. Here are some tips for writing a resume that former military personnel should follow to land a technical job after leaving the military: Begin with the obligatory and quite necessary contact information at the top of the resume. This is one of the most important features, so make sure you have several methods for potential employers to contact you, including email, cell phone, and snail mail. A short introductory couple sentences usually comes next. You should give a little biographical information about yourself and directly address the position you seek. This part should be different for every technical job for former military members you apply to. The employment or experience section should be after that. Start the military branch you served in as the header, and include your highest rank, when you entered the service, and when you left the military. Then, under this section, start listing the positions you held in the military. Make sure to list each assignment with the most recent at the top. Include the dates you held the assignment, responsibilities of the position, any leadership roles held, and any accomplishments or accolades garnered. A skills section should be next. The military provides many marketable skills, and you should list everything you have gained from your service. Examples of quality skills for civilian jobs include computer skills, electronic skills, technician skills, language knowledge, and equipment operating skills. Finally, if you have been to college or were sent to any schooling while in the military, you should list the names of schools you attended, dates you attended them, major fields of study, and degrees or certification you received. Five Ways to Make a Military to Civilian Life Transition Easier

1Five Ways to Make a Military to Civilian Life Transition Easier The process of transitioning out of the military can present its own unique set of challenges. While the armed services train soldiers well in technical and leadership skills and do provide soldiers with many useful resources as they exit, there are some things that military service does not prepare you for when re-entering civilian life. Here are five tips to help make the transition a bit easier: How to connect to a new community With its relocation and MWR departments, the military does a lot to help soldiers and their families adjust to a new base, posting and locale. Once out of the service, though, you may find connecting to a new community quite daunting. Apart from become involved with the school your children attend and joining a new religious organization, there are other ways to immediately connect to a new community. Tapping into your interests, hobbies and sports can reveal others who are like-minded and share your passions. You can also choose to get involved by volunteering with a not-for-profit organization or taking a class at the local community college or at a hobby or home improvement store. Many cities also offer a Newcomer's Group to welcome recent additions to their new home. Check out the meetings and events calendar in your newspaper or ask at the local library to find out when they meet. It's a great way to meet people who may know a lot about the city, who can perhaps point you towards other resources and groups and who want to welcome strangers. Finally, civic organizations and special interest groups offer a further way to involve yourself in a new community and build long-term relationships that can help with your career as well as your social life. How to write a resume Instead of a resume, the military uses a Field Service Record to detail qualifications, training and experience. This poses several challenges to you in civilian life. First, you may never have had to write a resume. Second, the information contained in the service record is dictated by military regulations. It may include things not applicable to a resume while neglecting to mention other useful and marketable skill sets. Finally, they are written in military language that is difficult to translate into civilian speak. In addition to learning how to write a good resume, you must also learn how to remain marketable in today's business climate. Military planners often look ahead to determine future needs and train soldiers accordingly. Also, few soldiers are concerned about getting laid off in a downsizing. You didn't have to be ready with a current resume and a strong network of contacts. In the competitive civilian world, individuals must keep informed about where their chosen industry is heading and gain or refresh skill sets ahead of when they are needed to ensure their future employability. Although soldiers pride themselves on being resourceful and self-reliant, this is one area in which it's best to obtain professional help. On many bases, there is a department that provides soldiers with specialized help in creating a good civilian resume and there are numerous outside sources of help as well. How to select your family's support team Medical and dental care and basic life insurance is provided to all active military members and their dependants and soldiers. Similarly, soldiers have access to basic legal services through the Judge Advocate General (JAG) office. Once out of the military, these support services are no longer available and you may have no idea how to locate, interview and select medical health providers, life insurance, lawyers and financial planners. It's important to learn about these different services, determine what your family's needs are and thoroughly research the providers before choosing your support team. Many resources are available, particularly on the Internet, to help you. Several even list important questions to ask during the interview process as well as the customer service record of various providers. How to succeed in the civilian business world One of the first things that soldiers encounter is the competitive nature of the civilian business environment. Most find the dog-eat-dog mindset of their new civilian co-workers and supervisors bewildering and disappointing. After participating collaboratively in military service where you are trained from boot camp on to look out for and depend on the other members of your team, you may quickly discover that civilian workers are often lone wolves when it comes to careers. Where you might expect camaraderie and support, you might find anything from caution to backstabbing, from poor morale to ruthlessness. While this is not true of every work environment, you need to understand that this behavior grows out of a competitive employment climate marked by downsizing, industry shifts and turnover. In the military, you are given an assignment for a specific length of time at a standard pay grade with a predictable salary and are provided with the clothing, equipment, and training necessary to carry out the mission objective. Ordinarily, you don't face such issues as researching a company prior to a job interview, negotiating salary and benefits packages, selecting and purchasing a civilian work wardrobe, keeping skills and a resume updated frequently, being ready for downsizing, creating and maintaining a network and giving a resignation notice without burning any bridges. Working with a transition coach or other similar resource can help to process the experience and ease the pains of necessary change. How to start your own business Perhaps because former military members find the civilian business environment so alien, some decide to become their own bosses and start their own businesses. Unfortunately, many aspiring small business owners do not take the time to fully research and plan how to start and run a business and lose whatever savings they have managed to accumulate. Starting your own business requires a clear vision, full commitment, plenty of work, and realistic planning. Fortunately, there are many resources available. Start with a local Chamber of Commerce or Small Business Development Center (part of the SBA). These organizations can help or point you in the direction of further assistance. Explanation of Federal and Military Transition Resumes

1Explanation of Federal and Military Transition Resumes Federal Resumes and Military Transitions are very different from each other. Which one do I need or do I need both? A Federal Resume is the most important document for starting or advancing your federal government career. A Federal Resume is different from a private-industry resume because it is typically longer and contains some basic "compliance" information required by government personnel. It is a critical marketing presentation, career summary, and personal presentation. It is not just an outline of your jobs and dates. It is a carefully focused, well-written, clearly organized and professionally presented career package that can help you win jobs and earn promotions. The Federal Resume utilizes a reverse-chronological format (most recent positions first) and could range from two to ten pages. Federal resumes are strategically developed to incorporate the all important key words and core competencies that you take you to the top of the qualification selection. Military Transition Resumes translate your military experience to relevant opportunities in the civilian marketplace. It is a much shorter document - limited to a two page resume, cover letter, and list of references. As a member of the Military, you have gained a wealth of experience, training, and education. You are qualified to work in a variety of civilian and contractor positions, both as a team member and a leader. For a Military Transition resume, we review your military background and match your skills and experience to civilian job requirements and of course "LISTEN" and conform to your career marketing goals. We translate ranks, titles, jargon, missions, and acronyms, allowing corporate employers to understand your career history. We review your duties and accomplishments, creating an individualized, dynamic package that highlights how the skills you obtained in the military translate to civilian workplaces. In other words, we enlighten the civilian hiring managers and ensure they understand the "VALUE" you bring to their organization. We provide numerous resume articles and resources to help you better understand the military transition process and various terms and definitions. Discrimination Against Muslims in America

1Discrimination Against Muslims in America Muslims have a unique and often misunderstood place in American society. Being misunderstood many American companies have the impression that all Muslims are immigrants and that the religion of Islam promotes violence. Even though hiring practices by large corporations are designed not to discriminate against any particular race, age, religion or demographic hiring decisions are often made by managers who hold biases. That creates serious problems for not only American-born Muslims but also those who have come from overseas. Despite their skills, abilities and even excessive qualifications for the job they are often ignored. Take Murad Ali for example. An American-born Muslim who is working on his doctorate, has a many years of experience, positive references, is a successful entrepreneur on his free time and a U.S. military veteran. After applying for a job that required 2-years of experience and an associate degree he received a letter indicating that he was not qualified. A 2001 study by the Women Working with Immigrant Women found that out of 32 women surveyed 29 employers commented on their scarves and 19 women were told to remove their scarf. The study also included field work where women who were similar in nearly every way went out and applied for jobs. In half of the cases where women did not wear a scarf the employer asked them to fill out an application or leave a resume. The women with the scarf who applied to the same company were not asked to fill out an application or leave a resume. In this study we find discrimination against Muslims common place and part of the hiring representativeเนโฌยs personal feelings about Muslims. Now imagine how discrete employers can be when looking through stacks of resumes. Certainly in such cases it would be easy to hire someone else that is less qualified for the position and have little chance of being caught. Discrimination seems to be a result of peopleเนโฌยs perceptions of Muslims brought forth through the media and their own narcissism about the superiority of their particular religion or faith. Murad Ali is the two time published author of A Call to Greatness and An American Mecca. He is also the editor of the Muslim Times at http://www.muradenterprises.org Related Articles - Muslim, employement, eeoc, arab, discrimination, Email this Article to a Friend! Can I Compete Without a Professionally Written Resume

1Can I Compete Without a Professionally Written Resume As a Certified Professional Resume Writer, I am often approached by highly qualified job seekers frustrated by weeks and often months of costly unemployment. Job seekers who have sent hundreds of resumes yet never hear back from the employer.I have found that the majority of my clients attempt to write their own resume and only seek the help of a professional after weeks of failure. There are many reasons they fail, but most tend to be associated with ineffective resume templates designed in the 1990s which are not compatible with today's keyword searches done by recruiters and hiring managers. I am dismayed to think of the number of opportunities that highly qualified candidates have lost to those less qualified but have a better understanding of today's job search process. The Top 5 Reasons That Resumes Fail1.    Lack of Industry Specific Keywords - Due to the sheer volume of resumes that employers receive, only a handful are ever printed and will reach the hands of the hiring manager. Employers today often use software programs to search for keywords specific to the position. The more hits that they find, the more likely it is that your resume will be read. This is the process that most often eliminates even the most qualified candidates from consideration.2.    Resume Format - There are a variety of formats available to better market your skills and experience including: chronological, functional, hybrid, Curriculum Vitae (CV), Federal Resume format, etc. Choosing the wrong format for your situation can quickly eliminate you from consideration. A well-written resume will match your skills and experience to the hiring managers' needs.3.    Objective or Qualifications Summary? - I personally believe that an old-fashioned objective is a waste of the most valuable real estate on the resume. It would be nice if employers really cared what you wanted in a job, but in actuality they are only concerned with what you can do for them. Why not use this area to market the skills and experience to position you as the best candidate for the position?4.    Task-Focused vs. Accomplishment Based Resume - Unfortunately, the majority of resumes that I review are more of a chronological history than a true marketing document. Imagine a hiring manager with one position to fill and 100 equally qualified candidates applying for the position and each candidate has a similar educational and professional background. It's easy to see that the candidate who contributed the most in previous positions is likely to get the job.5.    A One-Size-Fits-All Resume - In today's highly competitive job market a one-size-fits-all resume really fits none. An employer searching for an accountant is going to be searching for different keywords than an employer searching for a sales representative. If you don't know what type of position that you're looking for, how will the employer know? In today's highly competitive job market it is imperative that you quickly and concisely provide the hiring manager with the information that they seek. A well formatted resume will allow the employer to quickly glance at the resume and find the skills and experience that they are looking for in the first 1/3 of the first page. Only after capturing their attention will they bother to read your resume from top to bottom. When seeking the help of a professional it is important to seek a "certified resume writer". With today's economic conditions many claim to be professional resume writers, however, they often do not have the training necessary to help you get through the screening process.Choose carefully; ask for and compare samples of their work. Your writer should do much more than simply type a resume. They will analyze your career and help you determine your career direction, develop a format that's most suitable to your specific situation, and then craft a strong and compelling marketing document that targets your career objective and positions you as the best candidate for the position. A professionally written resume can help you get the job that you want and the pay you deserve.

Easily Write Your Resume Using Resume Templates

1Easily Write Your Resume Using Resume Templates Are you aware that resume templates will let you easily write your own resume? Most people don't know this, but it is a good idea for everyone to be aware of.First you need to understand that a template will give you the right format for the resume that will allow you to get the job you want. You can also find templates that are job specific. This means that if you are applying for a nursing job, your resume will reflect that position and ensure that all of the pertinent information is available to the employer. You don't want to just use a generic resume these days, especially for companies that state they are trying to fill a particular job position.A generic resume shows that you didn't spend much time on selling yourself, which is what the resume is designed to do. When you use a template that is for a specific job, this will impress an employer much more than a generic one will.It will also give you the best chance of getting the job you are applying for because they will know that you spent time on it to make sure that it offers them exactly the information that is the most important for them to know.Another thing that you need to understand is that the template is already set up so that you just need to add your information into it. You won't have to take time to determine the right format or the correct order that the information should be in.If you choose the right one to use for you, it will already be set up and ready for you to put in your information. Only having to add your information is going to save you a lot of time and hassle when you start writing your resume.Plus, it will ensure that no important information is left out that could harm your chances of getting the job you want. One last thing to understand is that a template will ensure that your resume will be very easy for an employer to read. It will hurt your chances of being hired if they can't read your resume easily. The template is set up and designed to make sure that all of the right information is added to your resume, but that it is done in a format that will be easy for any employer to read. Now that you understand this essential information, you can see why resume templates will make writing your resume much easier. You just need to decide if you will be wise and use a template, or if you are just going to wing it and hope for the best.
